The spruce pine is somewhat rare in my area of Alabama but there are several on my meager property. Unfortunately, one in particular needs taking down. it is about 24" in diameter and has probably 2-3 sawable logs.

I have never sawn spruce pine but I have heard from old timers that the wood is less structurally capable than the other southern pines. I intend to saw it up for general use as 2x4's, 2x6's, etc.

Anyone have knowledge of its use or other useful information/warnings about the species Pinus glabra?

Thanks, Dan

The conversion factors are on pg 10 of this pdf;

Make sure you are on the mixed SYP tables... which are slightly weaker than the regular SYP tables, then apply the derate for spruce pine, basically it looks like its about 80% of MSP (mixed southern pine, includes virginia and pond plus the regulars)

I have some on my house and it has done fine. I did over size it though. One of it's best uses is for paneling on the interior.
