I have a 1996 F-350 with a 7.3 diesel starts fine it will run around the world but shut it off and come back in a hour or more and it will crank like there is a fuel seloniod that has the fuel shut off. I have changed the fuel injector pressure regulator thought that was it. Drove fifty miles then back a half a mile lane got ready to come home last night it started and went about fifty feet and just like you would of shut the key off and then would crank but never fired. Went back this morning and it started and I drive fifty miles home ran like a top. Somebody told me to change the cam senor. Any ideas out there and as most fellows know engines now a days arn't much fun to work on. Thanks Bill

It does sound like a cam sensor.  Ford issued a recall, but it was only for the 1997 - 2003 models I believe.

Cam position sensor is a good pIace to start. I have a 2001 7.3 and have replaced mine at least once.

I would also say change the cam sensor.  Its easy to change and I think all you should need is a 10mm wrench.  I had a 2002 F250 with a 7.3.  I carried around a cam sensor at all times.  The truck died on me on the highway at around 90,000 miles.  Changed the cam sensor and I was good to go.  Bought another one to carry with me.  The sensor is right on the front of the motor.  Should be able to lay on the ground with your head under the front bumper and reach it.
