From beginning to end

Thought a pic heavy, from tree to table, might be of interest.  Here goes:


 
black walnut cut in May


 
Sawed into 2" slabs in June


 
Picked up from kiln drier.


 
Trimmed to 8'2" & Skill sawed one edge of each slab for jointing


 
back from a local shop in October that planed, jointed, glued & sanded


 
2 slabs to a different shop for butterflies, planing, epoxy and sanding & finish coat = 2 benches


 
finished products at customer (my daughter!).  SIL did the epoxy & slight rounding on ends & finish on table + legs.

It's very satisfying to be able to go through the whole process, from a tree to a cool piece of furniture.  That was what got me into the sawmill game, because I wanted to be able to do that. It's not cheap, or easy, and there is plenty to learn. 

But the end result is very satisfying.

Peter--was actually 2 truckloads!  Got 75 slabs total kiln dried and have another 50 air dried fm previous jobs.  Just sold 3 this morning @ $ 10/bd ft. to furniture maker.

That is highly valuable black walnut. Not just for the wood value, but more important to be able to sit down with family at a table that started as a tree you cut.
