How do edgers work?  More specifically, the blades, how do they move back and forth by turning a handle.  Pictures would be helpful, too.  Thanks.

D._Frederick

The edger arbor is either key wayed or splined, the saw hub and collar slide back and forth on the arbor. The saw hub has bearing mounted on it that is connected to lever that can shift the saw back and forth. Some move by rack and pinion gearing, others by hydraulic cylinders, some by sprocket and roller chain.

WM uses a rack and pinion set-up on there smaller mobile edger.

how do the boards typically feed?
Woodmizer LT40HDG25 / Stihl 066 alaskan
lots of dull bands and chains

There's a fine line between turning firewood into beautiful things and beautiful things into firewood.

Some have sprokett looking things on shafts that are also powered. Other's have knurled feed rolers some have insert bits you can replace in the rolers . I know a man got one with smooth feed rolers had it made that way because he didn't want any chance of marks on the wood.
