OK 'nother personal story:

As I previously mentioned, Gene visited PatD and me at the Cabin.  During our 3 mile golf car ride around my property, we passed a tree and he asked me what kind of tree it was.  My reply was that we called it Ironwood but I thought the proper name was Blue Beech.

So now the question that will forever remain unanswered.  Did he not know the species?  Did he know but needed a reminder?  Was he testing me to see if I knew?  Nothing else was ever mentioned about that tree.

Gene was so Gracious.

I recall an episode with beetles in freshly cut red oak and how I feared the dreaded powderpost beetle would have infiltrated my storage.  After several email exchanges, he took the time on a Sunday afternoon for a phone conversation.  His advice was valuable and recommendation for the VT etymology laboratory.  Turned out the pests were the ambrosia beetle and a curable problem.

To take time out of his weekend to talk to the little guy says volumes of his character.  I honor his life, his work, and his contributions to this world.
