My fav radio station does this every year. Get the listeners to vote online, and plays the favorite 2,000 songs as a countdown. It started as a 500, that took a week. Now it's a 2,000 that takes a Month. Bonus is they drag up some obscure songs, and don't repeat a song (8 to 5) for a whole month.

We are finishing week 3 now, and I'm listening to the after 8pm "catchup", where they play the days songs for the "night shift".

Best thing is you have no idea what's coming next.
Metallica
Elton John
Beatles
Megadeath...

Oh...
Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner just one the replay for the day.  ffwave
Empire of the Sky, played in week one. all 15 mins

The night repeat will probably work best for the other part if the globe, but it's all streamed online.

Well, down to the sharp end of the Countdown. Conveniently timed for after 5 on Friday with a live event in Auckland (with a rock concert to follow). I'm relaxing here with a quiet ale. Lil is off on a girls road trip with her cousins, and says their bluetooth speaker just died.  ffcheesy

#9 - Korn - Freak on a Leash

Not on my top 20 list, but voting works like that.  :wink_2:

So the top 5...

#5 Pearl Jam - Black
#4 Limp Bizkut - Break Stuff
#3 Rage Against The Machine - Killing in the Name
#2 Blindspott - Nil By Mouth
and
 #1 Foo Fighters - Everlong.

I'm afraid to say my musical tastes have become pretty mainstream (Rock) over the years as 3 out of the top 5 were on my list.

Blindspott may not be well known outside NZ. Maybe think of them like NZ's answer to Limp Bizcut? Very popular with the black jeans / T-shirt brigade, and awesome in a  live concert. This is the "radio friendly" version, the F-bombs have been deleted.

And Lil reports that they did catch the last 6 songs, as she was able to call up the live video feed on her phone, and cast it the the TV at their motel. But she couldn't chat at the same time. She is nearly ready for her Level 2 techie badge for that sort of work-around.  ffsmiley

I like that concept. Especially that no songs are repeated for a month! Listening to the classic rock stations around here, I think they have a playlist of around 50 songs. And Hotel California is about 30 of them🤦

Well, Ian- one of the top five is on my play list.... (Hint: the intro has a two-note Bass Drop that just blows me away.....)
I agree, @barbender , that's why I hardly listen to the radio anymore.

The local rock station I listen to has about 100, they cover 80's, 90's, and 2000's. Their motto is "We're all over the map, and we ain't askin' for directions!" ffcheesy
What's fun is I'll hear a song I haven't heard in 30 years, and realize that it would make a great cover band song. Just about any song has a video on Youtube how to play it. smiley_guitarist

Hotel California came in at #64, but hearing it once a month is fine.

The Rock generally have a No Repeat Workday, as in they won't replay the same song between 9 and 5. The game is that occasionally they do, and you win $1,000 if you pick it up.

They also try and support local music, like a new band can send them a demo and if it's any good they will play it, even if if's no officially released.

It's interesting to see how the business of radio has changed in the last few decades too. In the past the US FCC set up rules to what a radio station can play in a broadcast day. One rule they can play no more than 4 tracks by given artist in a 3 hour period, (this based on the US copyright laws). They also regulate the number of minutes of commercial advertising during a hour of programming. These rules have been under a lot of discussion, in the age of satellite broadcast stations (where there are no actual DJ's in a given city) and online streaming formats that go worldwide.

I think less regulated here, apart from "Broadcasting Standards", of which the Rock probably leads the amount of complaints.  ffcheesy

And yes the changing technology has shifted the way the stations have to operate. They are big on promoting the Rova App, which lets you stream radio and other channels to your phone. It's free, but obviously ad supported. They say the countdown was streamed to over 150 countries.

They seem to be heavily involved in the live music scene, both local and international acts, local charity work and other events. Keeps them "relevant" to the audience.
