Back around that same time frame Labatt's was giving away free Sabres touk in certain cases of beer.
My liver did it's part, it has been my favorite winter hat! Now I can't find it, and the wife doesn't understand why I like that one better than the regular-style Sabres hat (toboggan down here, don't ask me why) she purchased for me last year.
Yes, the free one I got in a case of beer is always going to be better, but you have to have played pond-hockey to know what a touk is.

I've worn the same Nike toboggan for years and years and years, maybe since my early 20's. It fits just right, tight enough to keep me warm but loose enough that I can hear through it. Well, until I found another, while the Nike once went to the wash. This new one is almost exactly the same but a hair thicker, which is nice, and no swoosh, which is fine, I don't care about that part. Other than work this hat pretty much stays on my head at all times, inside or out.

I thought it was 'tuoque'? But it has several spelling, all apparently correct?! Anyway, it's a Canadian term.

I'll have to see if it's here. It may be in the u.p., but I still have and occassionaly wear the knit hat I wore when I was a Kid. Probably as young as 10 maybe? 12 for sure.

According to the internet the common spelling is "Toque". Though it has been spelled differently in various places and still meaning the same thing.
The most notable mention of the word that I know of is in Bob and Doug Mckenzies 1981 version of the 12 days of Christmas.
For those not familiar with the lyrics...
"On the fifth day of Christmas my true love gave to me: Five golden Toques!
Four pounds of back bacon, three French toast, two turtle necks, and a beer... in a tree."
