EDIT - I guess I am more senile than I realize.  I have already posted this on "Trackor Logging with a Winch"  and did not remember until just now.  Sorry ...

One of only a handful of fir I have cut here in over 2 decades that did not have well developed stump rot. It was leaning left pretty hard but the good holding wood on the right did its job.

and it fell per plan

I decided to take it out in two pieces and cut it at the crook and above good wood (6" dia).

When I got up to the road I thought about using the power pole as a bumper and turning left to my little landing area a couple hundred feet down the road. Then common sense caught hold and I made up the saw logs right there, A 14' and two 12's.

Then grappled then down to my pile.

Looks like you have the amount of snow that I do.

About the same amount as northern MN, too. About 6" total melted down into a very hard crust😊

Well, I will comment that it is too cold, icy, and snowy to cut today... so this shows up in my updated topics to follow. :wink_2: ffsmiley

No snow left in my part of NH after last weeks warm temps.  Its been COLD the last few days, so ice is hardening back up, not enough to get on it with the atv yet.

Pulled a couple blowdowns off a trail this am, and cut an Ash that the dead top broke out of in a wind the other day.

Is there a market for fir G_Man? I've got a few balsam on my land, that look similar to what you've got. I haven't cut any lately, the ones I've cut previous had the same issues. Rot in the center, or those blotchy areas in the grain.

Resonator: Rot in the center is an opportunity to practice sawing parallel to the bark.
It is more work as far as edging goes sawing that way, but in some cases you can salvage some nice wood then throw the bad center into the firewood stack.

cut and set aside a dump trailer load of blow down spruce logs from a neighbors private road.  These will be used for campfire wood. Most were roadside and I grabbed them with the grapple and stack into the dump trailer.  2 were far enough off the drive that I got a little winch time in.  No pictures, had about 5 layers on, getting done was the goal

Cold day GRANITE. Not a good time to play with a camera!

@Resonator - the fir I cut goes to a stud mill for dimensional lumber via a local log yard. They vary some but the specs here for me  are 12' min length, 6" min top, 6" trim. Straight thru. Last load was 375/mbf

Still wet here, have 80 trees laying in the woods and can't skid them home. did some dangerous falling at the 100' drop off to the quarry, (some trees already fall down into the quarry). so we took out the first row, had to fall uphill with the skidder winch pulling on every tree. took down 5 nice trees, 20 years old.
