Today as I was pulling out of the drive, I stopped to check the mail.  In with all the junk was an envelope that held a confirmation that I had made the last payment on my truck! 8) 8)

About a half mile down the road at a redlight, it sounded like something banged against my driver side door. I looked around and even cracked my door open to look at the ground.  But I didn't notice anything.

As I pulled into a drive through for lunch and lowered the window to place my order, the window dropped straight down into the door with a thud. :-\  I don't recall exactly, but it was such a shock that I may have offended the girl on the other side of the speaker.  As I was pulling out, I tryed raising the window to no avail.

A little internet investigation then dissassembly of the truck door proved that the window regulator is shot.  This is the little motor that powers the windows up and down with some cables on a spool. So I raised the window by hand and wedged it in place with a hunk of wood. The door is back togetehr and the part on order.  Now I need to do it all over again when the new part comes in. ::)

I think the bank sent a signal down from a satilite to trigger that part breaking just as I was revelling in the glory of having it payed off.

The drivers side window of my car had the same problem, the day before I had to report for Federal Jury Duty in center city Philadelphia.  It was very exciting, opening the door and getting the parking ticket and trying to get back in and drive through before the gate closed on me.

The most hilarious part of that drive was when I pulled up to a toll booth on one of the bridges, and had to get out of the car to pay the nice man in the booth.  The second my door opened, he had slammed that booth door shut, and was yelling, "Lady!  What are you doing?!"  I explained my window was broke, and he told me that I'd about scared him to death.   :D

Wow....sitting in a drive through, I thought you were gonna say....I lifted the window and wedged it with a Hamburger!  :D

At least it wasn't the motor. We have a Sububra Outback. The switch to the driver side window went on it. This was the last year all 4 switches were made together. We had to buy the whole thing.

thecfarm,
I have a four switch panel for all the windows on the drivers side door.  The passanger switch hasn't worked for quite a while.  I ordered that too. It's just as much as the regulators. ::)

Seem like $250 it was. Was thinking about getting one from a junker, but it's plastic and probaly the same thing would happen to that one too.

Back about 10 years ago I was driving around town in my Porsche Boxster with the top and windows down. All of a sudden there was a sound just like a pistol shot and I was covered in shattered window glass.
After checking for a bullet hole in my side, I realized the driver's side window had exploded for some reason. Turned out the motor didn't shut off and kept torquing the glass until it shattered. Scared the poo out of me!  :o

Somebody I knew tried to drill a hole in a car window once-- trying to redneck-rig a crank repair-- we learned that drilling glass is a good way to shatter the whole thing. . . . .

My DIL Wanda had an older Camry. Great car, traded in at over 200,00 miles.
She lost the power window switch on the drivers side at 125.000. My son Patrick (not a redneck) figured out he could swap it out for the passenger side. That worked for all doors. Only window that was operative when they traded was the passenger side.  I have no power windows on my Tacoma, nor my Honda Civic.......Wife's Accord has power everything.......Go figure........

Chris,

I have had to replace all four window regulators in my Jeep Grand Cherokee.  There was a little plastic thingy the would fail and the window would fall in the door.  You could not buy the little plastic thingy, but had to buy the whole regulator.  This was definitely a design flaw, but Jeep would not admit it.  My brother has two Jeeps for his boys and he has replaced at least four regulators so far.

Last Jeep for me.  If you do not know how to replace it, google it for your vehicle and I bet that someone has posted a video on exactly how to do it.  That was the case with the Jeep.

In any case, get the hamburger wedged out of there or you will have ants  :).

The part came in yesterday and replacement went nice and smooth.  That burger held up surprisingly well.

I always worry about taking parts off cars because of those automotive type fasteners. They can be such a pain to remove without damage.  But in this case, nothing out of the ordinary got in the way.

W,
Yep, a little plastic fitting that connects some cross bars broke off.  My buddy has the same model and year truck (2004 f150)as me and he already replaced all four of his. ::)  But I scraped out an extra 30,000 miles from mine. ;D

Youtube has a video of the  exact repair. :)
