Happy Independence Day!!   :usa:

When I was growing up the black folks always referred to any 4th celebration as "Going to the 4th".  I don't know if I can spell it as they said but is was sorta; "gwine to da foth".  Because of my upbringing, that is still the way I say it.

So today was da foth, so:

I decorated the Cabin entrance with our Flag display.

Then it was our traditional "drum chickin"& fixin's which included baked beans, cole slaw, Irish potato casserole, fruit & dip, chips & dip, banana puddin', and two different cakes.

Next came our traditional trail ride and scavenger hunt.  There was another wave of rides behind the ones pictured.  There was much fun and enjoyment for all, followed by a Watermelon cutting.

I worked with the excavator until the AC quit working. Way to hot to be in a cab with windows that open only on one side. I think I would have rather been over there with y'all. I'be eben bin in da south long enough I could have said it right.  ffcheesy

Learning the dialect when I drove truck down south took a little patience. One time delivering some log loaders, I just about had to have the customer write down what he was saying. (Course the fact that he had a chaw of T'backa in his mouth didn't help either). ffcheesy
Did learn at truck stop restaurants it was common for "Banana pudding" to be referred to as: "Nanner-nanner puh-den". ffcheesy

I chuckled at that because I originally wrote "nanner puddin" and changed it.

There was much talk about adding a Fall Get Together which would be a Wiener Roast and still include a Trail Ride.  Hopefully so.   ffsmiley

I wish I could've been a fly on the wall when one of my buddies lived in Georgia. His work crew was him (Minnesotan) a rural black man, and a Mexican kid. My buddy's name is Jake, but Dickey (the black guy) always introduced him as "Hank, from North Carolina"😂😂 I don't think they ever understood more than 10% of what they said to each other.

One day, Dickey and Jake pulled up in the pickup to the trailer court where Pablo, the Mexucan kid lived. Jake said it looked like a bee hive with all the Mexican guys leaving for work in the morning. But Pablo never came out. They waited for 5-10 minutes, until Dickey finally leaned towards Jake and said, "I don't know if Paco is comin' to work today or not, Hank!"😂😂 Got both of their names wrong, but I guess that's the way he heard them😊

One thing I discovered when I visited Jake (Hank) and his family down there, was the the differences in style in storytelling between north and south. Up here, say I'm telling a story. It's not unusual for a listener to ask questions, add a detail, or maybe relate a short personal, related experience as you go along. I discovered down south, storytelling is more of an oration. When I did the things I mentioned, that northerners do when a southern fellow was telling a story, I quickly got the sense that I was stepping on toes. "As I was sayin' ", the southerner would continue after I rudely interrupted😊

This was Mr. Deck Trevitt, a true southern gentleman I think. He was a friend of our own WDH, I later learned and had harvested many tracts of timber that Danny put up. Danny said he held him in very high regard (I have no doubt that went both ways).

Forum member Kiko bought Deck's shop, and had a picture of it on the Forum. I thought, "hey, I've been in that shop!" He also serviced Jake's (Hank's😂) Ponsse harvester on occasion.

It's a small world!

I had a great (but sad) patient in the burn unit as a student.  She was Bobby Jo from WV.  She was 4 and had burns inflicted by parents.  it was customary for children to call us by our first name preceded by Dr.  I was Dr. Bryan, but she always called me Dr. Brown.  That was at KU med burn unit.  Had it been in residency, I would have been Dr. Purple as I did that in Albany, NY and we all know they call brown, purple up there.  @Greenhorn @WV Sawmiller @TimW or is it they call purple, brown? ffcheesy ffcheesy ffcheesy  sorry it has been a while Tom.

I worked much of my career overseas and with TCN (Third Country Nationals) before that became politically incorrect and they became OCNs (Other Country Nationals) and they always called me Mr. Howard.

For some reason the Filipinos always held Engineers in very high esteem and called them Engineer Jones or whatever.

I've almost always been near a race track for 4th of July, and they usually put on quiet a To Do when it comes to fireworks.

I remember always wanting to.win extra bad on fireworks/ July 4th night because you got to do so in front of a huge crowd.  Not so much anymore, the cost of putting on those shows has increased dramatically, but a lot of tracks budgets haven't.  We saw a decent show the other night, but it wasn't what it used to be.  They also used to have patriotic music playing over the PA system that went with the show.

I'm bringing my dad to the track tonight, fingers crossed the weather holds and we get some big booms that'll wake up both the yuppies in there fancy housing developments, AND, the inmates at the jail that's a stones through away! ffcheesy

I took a trip to my sisters, then we went to her place on Kentucky lake.
I went to replace a water heater that failed at the lake. I had to replace the water heater and the breaker for it.

We did get a nice boat ride in in the morning of the 4th and enjoyed our visit together.
My dogs got their first boat ride and we stopped to let them run and swim.

We had Purple Drank at Jake's place one year.  Caused quite a stir because no one seemed to know exactly what was in it.....but good.   smiley_headscratch

I had to come up with something. All the Yankees were going on about the fact that it might get above 80 degrees, and they wasn't sure they were going to make it through. Mixed up a few different colored powdered gatorades in the coolers. They got hooked to it like drugs.  ffcheesy
