I have rented U-haul trailer with surge brakes and am not much impressed with them. You really have to get on the towing vehicle breaks hard to get the surge brakes to work.  If you have a long mountain to go down they are not very effecdtive.

For the weight of 3 1/2 ton sawmill, I would want no less than full time electric brakes, or better yet have hydrualic brakes installed.

heh, i don't think any u-haul rental gives a fair assessment of whatever it is you rented  :D

around here most boat trailers are surge brakes, if they are properly designed, and the brake system is sized for the load, there's no reason they shouldn't work.

that said, I like my electric brakes just dandy :)

I hadn't looked at LogMaster's website for a couple of years, so I took a fresh peek.  They now have some little mills to go along with those monster hydraulic driven ones.  Apparently, you don't get the hydraulic motor on the drive till you get up to the 86hp rig.
