I have a husky 3120 I use for milling.  My question is has anyone opened up the muffler on one of these?  It seems like it would really help on this saw.  I am afraid of making it too lean, and ther is no high speed carb adjustment.  Can I get jets to make it richer if I have to?

Hi Clyde, I too have a 3120 I use for milling. Got a new unit about a year ago and following the advise of others this is what I did to get more life out of it. I posted this info on the A.S. forum so if you read it there forginve the redundency. Took off the carb top cover, removed main jet and drilled it out two numbered drill sizes larger than the smallest bit that would fit in the standard orifice opening.  Removed muffler inner baffle tube and increased outllet opening under screen. Would suggest leaving baffle tube in place and just drilling additional holes in it. Milling in my experience takes about 3/4 engine speed (probably the top of the tourqe curve) not max engine speed such as in bucking a log so I dont think the exhaust flow is as big an issue. The lean factory jetting is a huge issue for milling though as evidenced by pre jet mods my saw would vapor lock after a long cut and then rest/restart. Havent had that hot run sympton since opening the main jet. bman

I opened up the muffler by drilling a few 1/2 in. holes under the muffler cover.  it seems to run better.  I did some milling this weekend, and after checking the plug it seems to be right on?  Maybe I wont need to go richer? Or at least until it gets colder out.
