I just moved into new construction in Macomb County and need to plant a tree in our yard.  The soil is mostly clay and wanted to know what would be the best tree out of the options we were given.  In the back of our yard there is also a small pond.  What would be the best to plant from the following:

Oak, Hard Maple, Hackberry, Sycamore, Birch, Beech, Gingko, Hop Hornbeam, Linden, or Ash.

Any help would be appreciated!

Were the tree species recommended by a local landscaper or arborist familliar  your area and what grows best there?

A willow tree wasn't recommended near the pond??

White birch are always nice in the landscape. Oak is good for the squirrels, but often a problem with acorns to clean up.

Hard maple can also be a problem during heavy seed years. How about a soft maple for its bright red fall color?

Just some thoughts.

My vote goes for the Linden. Nice shade tree and it'll grow in poor soil. 8)  We planted one in our yard where there was a lot of fill and it's doing well. The city of Rochester, Minnesota uses Lindens to plant along the streets.
