Troy,
Look at the bottom of the butt log and see if there any stain on it. That would be a sure sign that there is metal in the log. You can also get a feel for how deep it is into the log (close to pith or to the bark).
As you are taking layers off, you also need to keep your eye open for stain. Of course by that time it may be too late. The stain tends to run vertically and not so much horizontally.
Good luck,
Jeff

What a tree...I am envious....lucky thing about this time of year and the bees....I was tearing a house down last July and made the mistake of raking the siding where a massive (it turned out) colony of honeybees. The song " I ran all the way home...."  :D :D :D I live 6 blocks and still had bees chasing me....it was nearly an hour before I could get close to my backhoe and shut it off...what happened to me provided amusement to the locals for weeks at the coffee shop...I stay away from bees now.  ;D

When there that Big Ron I use the Log Rite A.S.S. and wedges to roll and manilpulate it where I want to go.  I could use about another 2 foot of leverage on this one.  I wonder if Log Rite might make an extension. 8)

how does one approach sawing a log of this magnitude?

How do you manage to to turn such a log when on the saw bed?

I have a WM LT 40 HD but have not sawn anything that size.

HARLEYRIDER

dingee,
go to the peterson website and watch the video. you dont have to turn um with a swinger.  when the time comes, I'm going to get a 36" bandmill, because I like wider stock. the swinger limits you  in width

HarleyRider,

With the Peterson swingmill you can easily double cut and make wide boards.  With the ten inch model you can make up to twenty inch wide stock.  Also there is a slabber attachment which is a wide chainsaw bar with ripping chain that mounts accross the frame and allows you to cut up to five foot wide!  I hope to slab out a few sections of one of these logs and will post pictures.

I raised my face shield to get a good look and it was a mass of bees!  Gobs of them!

Troy,
I wonder if you found the elusive "hundred acre wood"? You know, Pooh is going to be mighty upset about you cuttin' up his honey tree.  :D :D :D :D :D

Nice log.

Most of us down here are real protective of our Bee Trees.  What with all the diseases and predators attacking the European Honey bee, it is having a difficult time hanging on.  Bee trees used to be a common thing.  Now I'm lucky to find one in the swamp.  When a swarm does take up in a tree, mites or foul brood usually kill it inside of 3 months.  It's a sad situation and we are going to miss them.   :)

gdingee,
I too have the LT40 and I will be using a 24' extension to cut my beams.  As far as turning the log once on the mill, I will use both hydraulics and a cant hook.  I have to do some checking but Im not sure if the long extension has any hydraulic assist stuff on it for lifting.  I managed to get my beast off the trailer this morning and that was an adventure in itself.  Bent my A.S.S. pretty good getting it off.

Bent it?  You couldn't resist putting the 2' pipe extension on it?   ;D

Stew -  These were not honey bees, more like wasps of some sort.  Pooh can rest easy.

Kirk - Post some pictures of what you are doing with the beast.  I want to see that thing up on your mill, that's going to be a sight!
