some of you may know what a senior project is.. some of you older fellas like my pap have no i dea. basically  you have to do a big project for school to graduate. but any way i figured since im into loggin why not make a how-to video on cuttin trees to show what we do and the safest way to do it take a few pics tell what im doin and hopefully it works. ithe way i see it why not  show americas most dangerous profession at its best, so sumthin i like and show ppl that loggin is nt really all that bad i all in one. hopefully some ppl that dont like loggin get ot see it and see that its not all that bad and can understand why we live by " the bigger they are the harrder they fall  ;D "

Sounds like a cool project. I'll trade ya.

My project this semester will consist of planning and monitoring a series of harvests that are being carried out on the Penobscot Experimental Forest.

The treatments are based on the German silvicultural practice called Femelschlag. Go here to learn a little about Femelschlag:

http://www.umaine.edu/fes/Wagner/FERP/design.html

The silviculturists have mapped out the treatments, which began around 1995. My job will be to design a skid trail network that will work well with this silvicultural system and monitor the harvest costs and timber tally. Other classmates will monitor other sections of the project and we will then produce independent reports. Stand density and stocking data are being provided to us (for the first time in 4 years) and the logger has begun cutting.

From an operations standpoint I believe that this style of cutting would benefit the loggers, the regeneration survival rate, and residual trees that will be harvested in 10 or 20 years.

College projects were the best  ::)

What degree are you getting?  Where I went to Paul Smith's only bachelor graduates had to do a final project in front of like a review board, but a lot of the other courses had a pretty intensive final projects.  I couldn't stand it there anymore for a variety of reasons so I got a 2 yr and got out.

Forest Operations Science with a minor in Surveying.

The kids that come over here from Paul Smith's to finish their four-year degree do well. They appear to be well prepared for university life.
