Bitternut Hickory canker?

I've noticed that some of my Bitternut Hickories have growths (cankers?) the size of golf balls on the upper branches.  Others don't.
Any of the tree specialists know what this is, and what the prognosis is?

Could there be a hickory gall? There are galls on oaks.
