I recently cut some oak that had some rot in it.  Many of the boards had sound wood, but maybe the last foot or so would have some rot.  I cut this off before stickering to air dry.  However, this has made me wonder.  I assume that rot is bacterial or, perhaps more likely fungal, in nature.  Is cutting away the 'bad wood' going to keep the rot from spreading in the stickered pile?  I know that heating in a kiln to 160 and holding it there for a good while will sterilize the load, but that is outside of my budget at the time.  I do hope to have a solar kiln going within a month, but I am begining to get concerned over the fate of this stickered oak.  Is there anything I can do while air drying to reduce the loss to rot, or is this even a concern?  As always, thanks for all comments.

Drying it will stop the rot.  Cutting off the bad stuff was a good move.  You will be alright.  :)
