What is the proper name for this object?  A guy that I know found it in Lake Huron near Tawas, Michigan a number of years ago.  He's done a great job of cleaning it up.

I know that they were driven into logs in order to form large rafts.  This is a nice piece, hand forged.

Is there anywhere I could direct Chuck that would provide more history, background on these?

And, what are they called?

Thanks,

Mike

Never heard of a sawyer hitting one of these. Probably because the guys using them were well aware what one could do to a saw. Being a timber industry tool they were probably very careful with them in regards to sawing.

Found a couple wedge lookin dogs in a sunken log, with a chain type loop running through the wedge. Only ones we ever found.
