I'm going to go up north on Monday for a couple of days, just to get away from everything, enjoy some beautiful scenery, eat some pasties and clear my head.  It's going to be one of those trips that I enjoy a lot:  just driving, and seeing where I end up.  I'm thinking though on Monday night, I'll plan to stay in the Soo.  Tuesday I'll go over to Tahq. Falls, probably later in the day, after I've explored a little bit.  But I'm wondering if any of you eastern U.P.ers have some suggestions on some places to visit.  I've not been to the Soo in ages, so I don't know what's up there, besides the Locks.  Also, any good restaurant ideas in the Soo?

As far as ideas of things to see and do, anything in the eastern area is fair game.  I was looking on a map at Detour State Park--never been there.  And then I was thinking about even going over into Canada, since I'm right there.  Any suggestions on stuff over the bridge?

I look forward to hearing some suggestions!

Detour state park is a state campground. Put yer money in the pipe type of place. Its nice, but its rustic. Its right on Lake huron about 8 miles from our cabin right on 134.

Visit the Iroquois Point Light House Muesum at Iroguios Point west of Brimley and the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point north of Paradise when you visit Tahquamenon Falls.

The Antler's Resturant in Soo, MI is great for steaks. Then there are the Casino's in St. Ignace, Soo, MI and Brimley.

Did you realize that there is a whole different country just across that bridge at the Soo?  You have to practice the language just  so you can buy a cup of coffee or ask the way to the restroom, and if you go too far east they speak another different language that you need to learn.  :D
I eat a high-fiber diet.  Lots of sawdust!

If you look real hard,  just across the streed from the entrance to the locks,  you can find a FUDGE shop :D :D :D.  Boy I wish I were going UP dar.  I will be doing a lot of traveling next week,  but it will be going around in circles around tha hayfield :(

I'm not complaining though------I'm setting here eating some premium vanilla ice cream (compliments of our feed company) with UP maple syrup on it (compliments of Nailhead and da Boss)  8) 8)

If you had some water transportation, a trip out to lime Island is fun. THe Rabor Bay Bar has some great ribs and walleye and a view of the Island if you cant find a way out to it. When up to the cabin we have to eat at leat once at the Raber Bay bar. I introduced it to Chet,Pasbuild, Nailhead and Chets BIL there and they all enjoyed it. :)  Tammy and I really want to do the Agawa Canyon deal at some point, but I think you may need reservations. Maybe on a monday you wont.

We'll be going through the Soo about the same time as you Paschale.  We are headed up around the north side of Lake Superior and on to northern Minnesota near barbender and Minnesota_Boy.  We are leaving in the morning and will be at the Soo sometime late afternoon Monday.  If we see you wandering around the Soo we will holler.
Selling hardwood lumber, doing some sawing and drying, growing the next generation of trees and enjoying the kids and grandkids.

Hey Dewwood, maybe we'll run into each other!   8)

If I might make a suggestion for lunch.   ;D  You'll probably be hitting the bridge just around lunch time, and I always like to celebrate being in the U.P. by having a Pasty.  In my opinion, the best pasties near the bridge are made by Lehto's.  It's probably about 30 minutes out of your way, round trip, maybe a little more, but it's sure worth it.  I've been eating at Lehto's for the past 30 years, and I just don't think they get better than Lehto's.

If you're interested, head West on U.S. 2.  You'll pass a strip of tourist traps, and several pasty shops (a lot of people seem to like Suzy's, which you'll see on your right--you can sit down there, which is nice too.)  I keep moving though, and you start feeling like you're in the boonies.  After probably about ten miles from the bridge, you'll come to the bottom of a hill and see Lehto's on your left hand side.

All they sell there are pasties and cans of soda.  I always grab a pasty, a can of orange pop, and drive back to the nearby scenic turnout/park where you get a beautiful view of the Lake.  I never can remember if the park is east or west of Lehto's--I want to say it's east of Lehto's, but regardless, it's very close to Lehto's and makes for a nice break after the long trek to the bridge.

Hope you have a great trip!
