Mr Mom

How come lumber smells diffrent than firewood when you burn it??
When i built a pen for the goat we got i burnt the end pices and it smelled diffrent than the little firewood that i started the fire with.
Just a thought that i had.

     Thanks Alot Mr Mom

It may be that the lumber has little to no bark or sapwood where maybe the cut and split wood has a high precent. ???

We cut up a box of firewood out of old blocking and hearsaws.  We've found that firewood without bark tends to make almost no ash.

just another beaver with a chainsaw &  it's never so bad that it couldn't get worse.

Mr Mom

Leweee...No i cut the lumber away from were i built the pen.

This was some 1x10s and 1x8 that i bought at a mill for the goat gen. It is not treated so that is not the answer. Dont burn treated wood in the fire pit.

Bibbyman... Could it have somthing to do with what happens to the wood after it is sawed?? Some kind of change in the wood it self??

Thanks Alot Mr Mom

Mr Mom
Is this the same species of wood you are talking about (split firewood vs store-bought lumber) ?  Or just 'wood'  ???

It's probably like the smell of pulpwood when it's ground and digested in the pulp mill and you get to smell when the wind shifts. It's called the 'smell of money', ;D

Simple explanation, if it has to do with a *%#*^$@$^ goat, it has to stink. ;D

We have had goats here for a few months, they are leaving Saturday, or I am shooting them Sunday. Anybody want Peperoni (SP)

Mr Mom

You guys are to funny :D :D :D.
The wood was burnt before the goat was given to us.
Beenthere... You are correct. I burn firewood in the pit but that day i put some of the lumber cut offs and the smell if diffrent.
Maybe the smell that i smell is that it is pine and i dont burn pine that much in the pit.
The lumber is not store bought but came from an amish mill.
There is just a diffrent smell to me when i burn lumber than when i burn firewood.

     Thanks Alot Mr Mom

Probably different species? Too obvious, eh?   ;) ;D :D :D :D :D

White pine smells different than fir. White birch smells different than yellow birch. ;)

And...that Canadian maple really has a smell all its own... ;D ;D..(box elder).
Likely all woods have different smoke smells. But to answer your other question, sawing the wood doesn't change the wood, other than it may affect the moisture content over time. Wet wood has a different smell from dry wood of the same species, because the moisture will cause the wood to burn slower, thus more smoke. Smoke meat with wet hickory, for example.
