Every now and then I get a wink or two of rem 5 (rapid eye movement) sleep and wake up at 3:00am wide eyed and ready to scratch off. It's those days that you can't ever seem to get enough sleep, reguardless of how much you think you sleep that distorts my sense of needed rest. I have come to believe that we really don't need as much sleep as we think we do provided we get a few hours of rem 5 each night. If the body is over spent from hard work, that's a different story. I've found that I need a lot more down time to recoupe from fatigue.

I know people that probably haven't gotten deep rem5 in many years. They are like walking zombies. Then there's the thing about obeying our internal clocks. All this goes together like a math equation at times, but then it turns back into a big puzzel. Can't sleep ... toss and turn ... lay in the bed and wake up feeling like 400 lbs. of cement on two popsicle sticks, then all of a sudden I'm ready to go get em' and I've only had a few hours. ..... I dunno ......    There's also something about going to bed early and getting up with the chickens.

This topic has great interest to me. I get NO rem sleep. Have had 3 sleep studies done and the most REM I got according to  the Medics was .05% This makes for a very very tired boy.
I sleep all night, don't toss, turn or get up but wake up completely exhausted everyday.
Doc's have tried meds but they make me even more groggy and lethargic so are counter productive in my opinion.

My advice on aging gracefully... ride fast bikes and date faster women, drink good tequila, practice your draw daily, be honest and fair in your dealings, but suffer not fools. Eat a hearty breakfast, and remember, ALL politicians are crooks.

FWIW - When we were young the family doc told us how he only slept 2 - 4 hrs a night. Seems he could go to sleep and hit rem sleep way quicker then the rest of us. He musta had a heckuva honeydo list though  :D

All truth passes through three stages:
   First, it is ridiculed;
Second, it is violently opposed; and
Third, it is accepted as self-evident.

just a brief line or two on an interesting subject.

I have found that my wake/rest cycle is highly susceptible to influence by my diet.  I am personally, affected by caffine big time.  With a little bit of planning I make this work to my advantage - big time.  All other components of my diet also have a pronounced effect.

I've half way paid attention to this for years.  I do my best to be consistent in my diet and how I use my hours.  Every once in a while I need to remind myself how inter-related all aspects of ones life really are.

PS by no means should this suggest that I eat a healthy diet!

Make it a safe day!

REM sleep is when dreams occur, if I remember correctly.  I must be well rested, as some nights it seems I dream full length movies. ;D  I have been known to dream after falling asleep at the keyboard waiting for a FF page to load.   zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz ::)

The night's I dream I only need 4-5 hours of sleep.   The nights I don't dream 8-10 isn't enough.

There are times when I don't dream for weeks on end, and other times I dream almost every night. Lately I've been dreaming a lot, and feel very rested.  I'm sure it will stop after I start working again tomorrow  :)  Sometimes I stop breathing in my sleep too.  ::)

My father did that too.  One time he forgot to start again.  We had a nice funeral for him.  :o

If you truly do stop breathing in your sleep, go see your doctor.  NOW!!!

Now what about this dream thing?  Can't say I ever in my life have dreamed - which is to say I have no memory of every dreaming.  No memory of a dream.  I suspect I've dreamed. Hell I day dream enought for ten men.

How does that factor in?
I do dream don't I?

I've heard that ....... and if you can't remember them, but still know you dreamed something, you slept through it.

I like the dreams where I'm flying and able to float around.

I don't like the dreams where a booger is after me and I try to run, but my legs are in slow motion. I always wake up on those.

Had a few dreams where I lost all hope, money, property and family. I woke up thanking the good Lord that it was only a dream.

Had a dream the other night where I hit it big and was set up with a pile of money and new equiptment. I probably don't need to tell how I felt when I woke up.   >:(
