Stew,

Woodbowl's mill is what I am talking about.  You can see the splined shaft the saw blades are on.  I think you could transfer that shaft design to you gangsaw/edger with spacers and collars to get the correct spacing.  The USNR mills are very exspensive but are good systems.

First off I would see how small of blades they make that go on splined shafts.  If they do not make them small enough then see if someone could recut the centers of new blades for you.  Then get a shaft and spacers/collars made to fit the unit you are building.

I think that you may need that engine fron your car for this project.  The one in Woodbowl's post uses 800 HP but is cutting big cants where you will be cutting boards with smaller saws.

Let me know if you go this route as I am interested in making one too.
