Next summer I plan on making a root cellar into the side of a hill. Im sure cedar or treated lumber would be preferable but I have no cedar on my land and I don't want to buy treated.Anyway my plan is to wrap the structure in landscaping plastic before i bury it and there shouldnt be that much moisture except for the very high humidity in a root cellar.Anyone have experience with this? Im not that young and it only needs to last 30 years or so before caving in.

Have you any larch on your property?  If not, make your timbers a little thicker.  It takes quite a while for them to rot enough to cave in.

Have you any rock?  A little rock and concrete will last a lot longer than 30 years in the ground.
I eat a high-fiber diet.  Lots of sawdust!
