I am looking at purchasing a LT40 Super.  I have found one that is in good shape but the only concern I have is the enginge size.  Do any of you have any recomendation about wheather a 33hp cat would be enough power.  I know that they typically come new with a 42 hp motor.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

LT40's run good with as little as 18 hp briggs. 33 hp cat will be more than enough

I've seen the 33 CAT on a standard LT40HD mill and it was impressive.

But I've never known it to be offered on the Super series.  smiley_headscratch

Are you sure it's a Super?

The owner says it is a Super but I have not yet seen the mill.

I had someone tell me that you need the larger engine size if you are going to run the wider blades (1.5" vs. 1.25")

What size blades do most of you use.

FlipHelms,

I use .045 1.25 in wide on my LT40 with 25 HP engine. I would bet that the mill is a standard LT40 hydralic with the 33HP motor.

Also welcome to the forum.

I think most of the guys with LT40 Supers are running .045 by 1.25s.

We started using .055 x 1.25s a year ago.  They cut better through big hard knots but they're not lasting as long as the .045 blades.

We've ran through a box of .055 x 1.50 blades on our Super (with 25hp 3ph) and they maybe cut a little better and longer in the super hard to cut stuff but are not needed for 95% of the time.

What are you planning to saw with the mill?

BTW,  Welcome to the Forum!  Been lurking long?

I think you will find that 33 HP engine is a Kubota and it was not offered on the super's, only the standard LT 40's. The LT 40 Super came with a 42 HP Kubota.

I have the 33 HP Kubota and regularly use both the .045 and .055 x 1.25 blades.

Maybe what I saw was a 34 CAT...  smiley_headscratch

If you give me the owners name and state that he lives in I can let you know exactly what type of mill it is.  Thanks

I ran a LT40 Std Hyd with Cat 34HP (05 Model) for about a year, sold it and upgraded to Super (06 Model) with 51 Cat. I upgraded primarly for the Command Control and larger drive and up-down motors.  I have had very good results running the 1.25 - 045 blades on both the 34 HP and the 51 HP engines.

Thanks for all of the information.  It turns out that that if was a false add or a least no one can reach the guy now. Not sure if it was a scam or what.  I have been looking for a mill for a little while now and have not had much luck finding a used one.

I might just have to break down and get one of the new LT50's.  They look really nice but are more than I wanted to spend.

I am planning on sawing mostly hardwood and cedar with the mill so I don't know how much power I will need to be able to get decent amount of production.

btw:  I learned about the forum at the WM 25th anniversary show in MS.  and have injoyed reading and learnig from all of you.

Flip,

You may already be aware, but, if you are primarily interested in a used mill, you might want to look at www.sawmillexchange.com.  Brian has about any type of used milled you might want listed on the exchange.

You can also look right here on the Forum.  I don't know if there are any for sale right not that will fill you dreams but there may be..

JoeyLowe has his mill listed here on the Forum and he's just over the line in Texas.

FOR SALE: Woodmizer LT40 Super Hydraulic Mill w/sharpener and setter

Also...  Check with Wood-Mizer.  The local WM rep usually knows of guys that are about ready to trade up and what used mills that may be available.

They also have a few used traidin mills for sale from time to time.  Right now they have two ready for sale.

Wood-Mizer used mills

But they could have a dozen somewhere that may be for sale after they've been inspected and serviced.

The add that I was talking about was on the sawmill exchange.  Brian said that he was going to pull the add down due to no one being able to reach him.

I also emailed about the mill on the forum but he has already sold it.

I guess I will have to keep looking.

Thanks,
Flip

 8) 8) 8) :D youold timers correct me if i am wrong i have old model lt 40 hydraulic the hyd. pump is powered by 12 volt motor same as starter on ford autos which is fed by 12 volt alterenator not hp required my understanding is newer mills with big engines the engine runs hydraulic pump result requiring more hp and hyd. are a lot faster is this right or wrong :P :P :P 8) 8)

woodbeard

Woodmizers still run the hyd pumps with 12 volt motors, but that arrangment also requires a bigger engine to turn the bigger alternator for the pump motors.

MartyParsons

Wood-Mizer hydraulics are all operated by 12 V the Super Hydraulic has 2 pumps each pump 2 gal per min. and 2 12 V motors. Standard Hydraulic only one 2 gpm pump.  The power is drawn off the battery and the alternator charges the battery. There is a formula on how much HP a 140 amp alternator uses under load  ??? not sure. Now the LT70E25 uses 3 phase electric to turn the hydraulic pump. No battery or alternator on the all AC LT70E
