Heard this last weekend from WIDNR that there is now some kind of hickory decline going on in the Great Lakes states. Seems to be prevalent in bitternut but affects shagbark and others as well. Trees go fast too, just a little over a year from first signs to kaput. Has anyone more info or heard about this as well? I don't have lots of bitternuts but would be sad to see more diversity go. I've already got tons of elm going through another round of DED with our last three dry stressful summers and only a couple of butternuts still around with others already gone from the canker on that species.

Who in WIDNR is talking about it?  I'd be interested in a contact.

There is a little blurb on hickory mortality in this MN DNR newsletter  http://files.dnr.state.mn.us/publications/fid/oct2007/fid_oct2007.pdf I hope it helps.

The person giving the talk was Linda Williams, DNR Forest Health Specialist for the Northeast region. Sorry, I don't have any contact info like an e-mail address or something.

Seems they don't have a lot of info at this point, the link from the Minnesota site seems to cover it. The disappointing news so far is that examples from all ages of trees and different areas have occurred. Sort of like the problems with butternut, observed over a widespread area and even small numbers of trees far removed from others being affected
