Well big bucks for me anyway  :D  :D
Brought home the new lumber/log/dozer/firewood hauler today.
1988 GMC. 14,000 GVW. 6.2 diesel, 4 speed, new paint, good tires and brakes. Need to build a bed for it, put stacks on it, Hey it's a diesel it has to have stacks 137,000 miles. Got it for $1500.

This will beat hauling firewood in the suburban by a long shot!!
Now I can let the wife drive the Burb this winter and store her caprice. If someone runs into the Burb I won't feel bad. Besides it goes better in the snow than the car.

Thanks Don, I'll keep that in mind

Jeff it's non turbo. The got turbos when they went to the 6.5. We have had pretty good luck with them in my family. Nephew had one that came apart. But it was a an engine that came out of a hummer no idea of miles maintenance or abuse.
to be fair we where not exactly easy on it  :D it busted a carnkshaft

Those Humvee takeouts make those old trucks an attractive buy, these days.  You can repower for under $1000, where an older Ford diesel would cost about 4 grand.  Two of my buddies have had to replace their 7.3s and had to buy Factory Remans because nothing else was available.

I waver back and forth on what I will do when the day comes. Rebuild is as much or more as refit with a reman from my understanding. Or buy a crate engine, or buy another "new" one. I like to get 'em about 2 to 3 years old. With patience you can find 'em cheap that way. But on the crate engine DanG ain't it about $7K? But my 1999 7.3 only has 270,000+ miles on her she is just broke in good I hope. crossingfingers_smiley

I just pulled into the yard about 20 minutes ago with 7.5 tons behind me. 3.5 of trailer with 4 tons of logs on it. The guy I bought the logs from hauled my 3.25 ton skid steer for me to save me a trip, behind his brand spanking new Dodge 3500 dually. 7.5 tons versus 3.25 tons and he could not keep up with me accelerating. Scouts honor. I just figured he was not putting his foot into it. Babying his brand new shiny toy and all. I have a bad habit of pretty much romping on mine when I have a heavy load. Just opposite of what i should I guess but I don't like to slow highway traffic so I push the throttle to military power.

I know he was trying to keep up because when we landed at my place he said "What have you got in that thing I could not keep up?" I wanted to say "A towing chip" but I just said cooly "A tired old abused diesel with over a quarter million miles on it." I saw no reason to elaborate about the chip. :)

The point was, 6.2s are a good engine to have right now because they can be replaced cheap.  Not true of the others.  Some of the others will outperform the 6.2, but they'll all blow up on ya, and $1000 is a lot easier to handle than $4000.

I saw an ad today for a place in Ga. that has 350 6.2s on hand for $950 each.

Sorry I missed the point Dan. I'm good at that unfortunately.  I wonder if a 6.2 will fit in my Ford when the time comes. I certainly don't wanna start a debate but I do respectfully disagree with you all the others blowing up. If you ask the guys at the junk yard what the best diesels are, you will get a different opinion than the guys at the kwik lubes. I don't miss an oil change, and even right here in my little 'ol town there are 7.3s in the million mile club. The ones in the junk yard never saw an oil change or at least not enough of them. A consistent oil change is the key to longevity for any engine but the 7.3 seems to thrive on them.

Yeah, a 6.2 will drop right in there. 8) 8)  A'course, getting everything hooked up and running would prolly be quite a challenge. :-\

We got this old girl brand new in 1988.We fitted it with a steel bush box and it was our main crew cab for many years before buying a newer model. We took the box off and replaced it with the flat deck, welder and compressor and it was our backup shop truck until 2001.After that I used it occasionally and finally gave it away.

The truck went through two Auto trannys but the little 6.2 diesel was still running just fine at over 300 kms.

Yep, I have been wanting a Ford diesel 7.3/6.9 van to convert to 4x4, but, the thought of that rebuild (and that is the lower end!) or doing it myself keeps me in the gas ones. Sort of like buying a Taurus for a "steal" of $500 and then finding it takes a tranny rebuild over $1400+ that costs more then the car will ever be worth.

I repaired a Dodge/Cummings I-6 in a 3500 for someone. I couldn't believe the inj. pump was $1800 ? something rebuilt and $3500 brand new because ... Dodge puts it own OEM sourced circuit board on top  smiley_thumbsdown  I only had two words when learning the price "trade in".

I have already decided, When I need a new 7.3 PS she'll get top of the line. I LOVE my 2000 F-550. I only has 160,000 on it, but it is the truck i have needed for YEARS. It is here to stay!  Watch out for all the used 6.0 PS starting to show up, BIG trouble! The trouble with the 6.0 is the reason I bought my 7.3 when I did.
