Is the color of ash's heart wood green?  I was bucking a ( I think) green ash log.  It had a white sap wood and a green heart wood.  I think that it is ash because elm dosen't grow around me.

I would bet that it is poplar. There isnt any ash in our area that is green. Its either rather white with a brown tint, or if lots of heart wood, very brown towards the red side, never green. (green and red make brown in color mixing)

It is light green or dark brown.  Isn't soft either, hard like oak. 8)

Green ash sawn lumber is indistinguished from white ash. But, it doesn't have green heart.

From Textbook of Wood Technology.....

black locust can be greenish yellow, dark yellow or golden brown

yellow poplar and Magnolia can be yellow, dark yellow-green, green or greenish brown to greenish black (magnolia)

black gum is greenish or brownish gray

I looked again today and it (looked) green but had light brown on it too.  It has a wide sapwood and a light brown almost green heart wood.  It is a 21" log the sap wood is about 5" thick and the heart wood is the rest.  I was cutting right before dusk so it looked green.  Thanks!!! 8) ;D :) :D

Green/light brown/purplish streaks = tulip poplar.

Ash sapwood & heartwood is very light even white from my experience

Yeah, most all the ash I have seen (and that has been quite a bit in the last couple of weeks) is very light wood, with maybe a little darker center.

White ash can be very light in color and in weight.  Black ash is much darker, a rich brown and weighs quite a bit more.

White ash isn't as heavy as maple, but it don't seem too light when handling for the woodpile. :) Might be denser up here in the north. I agree black ash is heavier. ;)

I did smme more looking in the woods and found out that the tree was Yellow poplar,  Then I saw a green ash and a yellow poplar right next to each other and the bark looked Identical.  But then I looked up and the leaves where different on the 2 trees.  It is amazing what the leaves can tell you!!!!  Thanks!!!!! 8) :D ;D
