Detroit 371/471 moxie

Does a 471 detroit or even a 371 have enough power to run a non production circular mill if their is no parisitic load such as a sawdust  blower or hyd pump. 48" blade @ 550 rpm.I know more is better but if a 471 is available would it do the deed.thanks Frank C.

There is a mill in Shelburne Falls that is using the 4-53 off of our self propelled chopper. I know of several 4 cylinder Detroits running small mills. What is member woody1 running? I don't know if its a 4 or a 6 cylinder Detroit.

I'm running a 4-71 on an 01 Frick handset with a 54" saw and Cornell sawdust blower. I have plenty of power.

I ran my Lane with a 52" blade that has a sawdust blower with a 371. I upgraded to a Cummings B4T 100 Hp turbo. I think I went from 80Hp to 100Hp. I have the 371 still set up with a pto clutch if you need one. I am in southern New Hampshire.

I need to come buy that 3-71 from you before someone else decides they need it more than me.  I bet it is buried in the snow right now - that picture makes me long for spring.

FYI - I've got the shingle mill in the cellar and everything is freed up and working (Thank You Rust Reaper!!) .  It has a really neat geared eccentric setup on it which pulls the carriage back at probably twice its feed rate.  You can only feed it so fast but you can pull it back as fast as you want.  They guy who designed it was really thinking about production.  If you believe the Lane docs this mill was capable of 50K shingles sawn and edged by 1 man in 10 hours.

I need to build a jack shaft and get some belting made up and they we can play with the electric motor you've got.

I've got the 220 line ready to go.

The circle mill I have is powered by an ol' 4-71. My Uncle ran it for many years and I don't think it was ever ran at its full potential/rpm.

There is an Amish guy in my area that works on diesels. I know he has a few (not detroits) if your interested. He tried selling me a Tomatsu. He has bought some Deeres before and over hauled them also.
