I don't like to place a log on the mill with a FEL either. Since I don't have a dead deck, for small logs, I pick them up with the FEL and then lower the forks very lightly on the rail. Then I manually roll the log off the FEL onto the mill. Usually when I do this, the forks will come up off of the rail. For the larger logs, I use the FEL to roll the logs up the ramps onto the mill. Using these procedures, there is very little stress on the mill other than the weight of the log.

when using a winch like shown here I like to rig the cable to the log different than your pictures, show, John.

I use a chain and hook to each end of the mill/trailer/whatever, and then attach the winch line to the middle of the chain, this keeps the log from slipping sideways when it hits any resistance.

There's a fine line between turning firewood into beautiful things and beautiful things into firewood.

Dan,

Yes, I agree, especially when there's a danger of the log slipping, and your diagram a method which I intend to start using more.

cheers and thank you.

Oh my. I really like that.

Just a clarification on my little accident. I actually don't put the log on to the mill with the fork. I put the forks just up to the mill and roll the log on. I know I said different. But when this happened I was actually repositioning the tractor. I was not able to back up do the weight of the log so I lifted the log up high so the weight wouldn't be so forward. Then I proceeded to lower down to a more normal height when I learned a good lesson. 2K happens to be the load capacity of my Allmand TLB 25. It is a beefier version of a Teramite.
