I've only had my helmet w/muffs since Feb.  I'm sure I won't want to wear them this summer for extended periods.  It's amazing how warm that helmet and muffs keep your head and ears when it's below freezing.
If no impact hazard to your head exists you might want to consider a landscapers face screen and ear muff combo. I use these all the time when I`m bucking logs in a pile and there is no one else around to cause me an unheard approaching hazard. I even have a couple of sets with the radio muffs, which are kind of nice.

You might be pleasantly surprised how much cooler the muffs are without the helmet.

A local logger lost vision in one eye when he got an infection form a pc of debris cutting trees. It wasn't the impact that hurt him, but the infection. My sis-in-law is an eye Dr so she confirmed the danger of bacteria getting into the eyes. She makes more $ than us woodworkers so I listen :)

I like earplugs, but after several insert/removals, they don't work as well. I like the E.A.R. brand FYI.
I know you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant! :)

I need prescription lenses so I have a pair of approved safety glasses with side shields.  That is all the eye protection that I normally use.  I have a couple of forestry skid lids with muffs and screens but I rarely use them for a couple of reasons.  One is that my glasses fog up and freeze constantly with the screen down.  Two is the aforementioned spit problem.  I must be a little sensitive to pollen and dust etc. as my sinuses will block up sometimes.  When that stuff lets go and you spit it through a frozen screen you soon get over the advantages of the screen.  I use full brim lids now and my safety glasses and I don't have any more trouble with stuff getting in my eyes than I did with the screen.  I use deci damps or other similar earplugs.  I usually have more trouble staying cool enough not to be wet with sweat in the winter, so I only use a hard hat liner in the coldest of weather.
440B skidder, JD350 dozer, Husqvarnas from 335 to 394. All spruced up
