I made a knife out of a railroad spike. It came out pretty well, and takes a good edge.

Once I tried to make a chisel out of D2 tool steel, but it was just too difficult to work. I was able to make some stuff out of some 4140, and was able to get it to 55-56 Rc using a homemade "superquench".

I get a lot more pleasure out of using things I make for myself as well, be it tools, guns, knives, flies, or flyrods...

About 30 years ago I met the widow of a Mr. Bergmann who sold pre-WWII hand forged tools in Berlin.  He had been out of business for years, but she was selling what he had left, if you could meet her.
Most of the common tools were long gone  but I bought a large collection of odd tools like: skew chiels, gouges, curved gouges, spayed gouges, parting tools, bent spade gouges, and spoon bit gouges.  Lots of fun.   And all of them at a fraction of the  going rate.
At the time I was involved in restoring an antique desk and spent the money I would have had to pay for the restoration on the tools.  I still have the desk  AND the tools.I havenĀ“t  even used  most of them.
While I am at it I would like to mention that the finest woodcarving I have  ever seen was in the cathetral in Toledo, Spain.  It is worth going to Spain just to see that alone.
