What do you fellers do about blue stain in white pine??We pretty much don't cut it when the weather is hot and humid,of course thats no good if you make your living with the mill.We have had some luck sticking it good and blowing air from a fan to dry it quicker.

Dip or Spray it with a lumber fungicide.
1.5" tall dry sticks, 3' long, 2" between boards, bottom layer well away from the ground (no grass).

Or straight into a kiln or a drying shed with fans

Out here, there is a demand for blue stain in lodge style homes. Whether it be stripes or blue as a pair of blue jeans. When milling it we sort for color. After milling, it is stickered and air-dried. The color seems to stay consistent with when it was milled.

Try a little house hold bleach mixed at about 25% with water.
But like backwoods sawyer, we have a demand for the "blue pine".

Keep it too wet to stain, e.g. constant sprinklers or in a pond. Otherwise mill ASAP or in  fall-spring

Gday Frank

I get it bad on the Radiata pine we mill overhere the average temp for the year around home is 89of and for 4months during summer av is 96of and our hot days can get upto 118 of not bad weather for drying/fires I tend to mill grade orders strait away as soon as the logs  arrive or within the week case pallet and sleeper orders
the logs are sawn within the month .
On my sawn grade timber i use a chemical called dmold it dilutes 20/80 with water
but i only use that when the humidity is higher spring/autum as drying times are slower
in the middle of summer I can airdry 2 inch boards down to 10 to 12% in 2 to 3 weeks and inch boards can dry witinin a week  with sunny windy days .
great days for fires  :o but I dont want to dry my timber that well :D :D :D ;D

I have a similiar question for exporting cant, I have a customer in korea who wants 200*200 cant(8*8") in shorts for resawing. the problem is getting it there without massive amount of bluestain or mushrooms..they are just going to be too big to airdry in any sort of reasonable timeframe. A sealed shipping container is a great place to grow mushrooms on wet timber.

Has anyone has success with anti-mold chemicals for larger section sizes?

Saw fast, dry most quick is the best way.  Bleach or Fungus spray works if you coat the wood well.  Dipping is how the large mills do it.   We do not worry about it for the most part and have a good market for the pretty colored wood.

That was made blue.  Most of the time it will just be in spots along a board.  That was blued so we could make some paneling for a home.

Hi Duncan/Amberwood

I looked into exporting flitch 4x4 6x6 8x8 10x10  10' and 14' lengths to china a few years ago Have You talked wiht RADEX in Geelong They are alot cheaper than container freight plus you can get it on as deck cargo plenty of air movement if You put some sticks in between each row as itts packed. Id use DMOULD its made in Melbourne ill get the details for You. I just apply it with a 20lt/7gal backpack sprayer but if You where doing any large volume id build a diptank .

Seems to me that all exports have to be kiln dried to kill the bugs, (may be just a west coast thing) but getting the moisture content down would also stop the blue stain.

Gday Backwoods

Export of GOS Case grade flitches has been going on overhere for the past 25 years since the Ash Wednesday Bushfires wiped out a good part of our pine plantations in VIC and SA One company even set up a special flitch mill in Portland vic exported nearly 1.2 million tons of flitchs and chip over 2 years just from the mill .

There is a BIG market in Japan, China , Korea , Taiwan what they call case grade flitch mainly 6x6 8x8 but as we all know they want to pay bugger $450 to $495 per 1000bft all for it because its ment to be going into packing cases and pallets but Who knows where it ends up
