So I can tell red maple from sugar maple when they get some size from the bark.
How can you tell the babies apart? Want to make sure there are some sugar maples around down the line. There are a few large sugar maples scattered about but not a lot. Think I have seen maybe a dozen on 300 acres.
Was reading here that they like to come up in a beech forest(which I have plenty), so want to be on the lookout for them.

Thanks!

sugar has brown pointy buds. Brown branch tips. Does not sucker well off mature tree stumps. Bark is tighter than on red maple, more resistant to moose rubs.

red has red, blunt or round tipped buds. Red branch tips. Suckers profusely off any aged tree stump. Moose love the scrape them up.

You probably know the leaves apart.
