Everyone thinks of AOL as a staunch member of society that will never go away.  Here is an instance of a lot of people who lost their Blogs containing family history, names, vacation descriptions, etc.   If the pictures or Articles had been linke to in the Forestry Forum, you would be seeing a little red x everywhere the picture once existed.

The unfortunate thing is that, not only would the posts in the threads be meaningless, but you would have lost things yourself that you might not be able replace.

This note from AOL was followed my many, many pleas for peoples material,  I'm afraid, to no avail.

Dear AOL Hometown user,

We're sorry to inform you that as of Oct. 31, 2008, AOL® Hometown was shut down permanently. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Sincerely,

The AOL Hometown Team

This is one of the reasons that The Forestry Forum asks you to use the Forum's Picture Gallery, and to write articles in your own words rather than depend on a link.

You should always back up valuable material on your own computer and even back that up as well.

Boy that AOL is one cold mother. Never did like them. It was a great day when I dumped them. Joe

Just as cold as walking up to the door to work in the morning and reading a sign posted that says no more work, close permanently.  No two weeks notice, no severance. :-\

Our family uses a program called dropbox, where each member has a program on their computer, the program is in your regular document file.  Any member saving a picture or email to their computer file automatically has it transferred to the other computers that you have "invited" to participate.

The only drawback is anything done by anyone on their computer is done on your computer, so back up files are required.
