How much cutting of what size wood do you envision and what is your budget? A cheap big box store tool rarely performs satisfactorily for very long.

You could try and find a Home Depot rental Makita 6401 they sell after renting for a little over $200.  A good saw and if you want more power a 7900 Dolmar cylinder and piston bolts right on, then you'ld have one of the best power to wieght saws made.   Steve

I was thinking about a good all around saw.  Sthil or Husky was my idea.  18-20 inch bar possiably

All around and on the cheap. Makita 6401 = Dolmar 6400 rental saw $175- $220 for 20" b+c 64cc. Then someday you can put the 7900 top end and have a 79cc monster.

look in saw shops at what the have for used saws, usually can find something that is decent.

You'll find that the Makita -Dolmar saws  are built WAY better than home owner Stihl or Husky saws.   Steve

i second that, your better off getting a cheap pro saw then wasting money getting a small homeowner saw.

After today, I have to agree. I fixed a customer's Homelite 33cc with 14" bar for him, they come with a fake hand brake ... and I could barely stand to use it for the 15 minutes we needed it (because I would have had to stop and get my Stihl ready to cut) cleaninghis property of limbs.

Why couldn't I stand it? Vibration! I had forgotten how dreadful the Poulan and Homelites are vibration wise. Way worse then even my cheap MS-180c. Plus, it did not have that "rev" the Stihls have, takes a long time to get up to speed.

$100 looks attractive for a new saw, until you really have to use it use it, after having a Stihl or Husky.

Homelite, Macs And Poulans make home owner Stihl and Husky saws look good, except the 1 series Husky which is the same as a poulan.  I'd still look for a saw that is  built good, pro Husky or Stihl, Dolmar, Makita, Echo, Shindaiwa, Redmax, John Deere (Efco, some cheap ones on Ebay now) are all built good.  Steve

There's a guy who used to work for me, studying land surveying at Paul Smith's right now.  He's a freshman, name of Zach Bull.  You might know him.

I'd check eBay for a used Makita or Dolmar.  John Deere CS36 also seems to have a good following.

There's a John Deere CS52 new for $288 shipped or a CS36 for $218 shipped on Ebay.   That CS52 would be a nice saw the 36 kinda small.   Steve
