Saw this article in the paper.  I drove by the one area they were working and you couldn't really see back in at all.  I was hoping to see some logging action :)

Surprizes me Weber is shut down right now and keeps moving there reopening and theres a question wheather they will open anytime soon.

The Game Commission has been doing clearcuts for years.  They clearcut more than most landowners.  That's because they get areas of great cover back for the wildlife.  Seems like they have a major PR problem.

I thought Weaber was supposed to start taking logs next week.  Have you heard differently?

part of the problem is the forestry community is too silent on these issues, the higher learning institutes should have press releases, and general education awareness for the general public.

Kids are tought in school that clearcuts are evil, and also even harvesting trees are evil.

And its been that way for how long?  The forest community isn't going to get off its duff to do anything.  They have a very poor track record.

The PA Game Commission set up an area that showed the different types of harvesting techniques and the different outcomes.  I didn't even know they had this until I heard about it, and I only have a vague idea where it is at.  They did something but dropped the ball on the PR.  People believing that cutting timber is harmful to wildlife shows how bad the PR really is.

The best PR that the forest community has come up with was Smokey the Bear.  It did such a good job that now people are against any type of burning.

The only company that has PR on forestry in this province is J D Irving. A private, family run company. The government says nothing, they don't even mention that we have a silviculture program. Only time forestry is brought up is when there is bad news on the TV or papers. They don't want the public to know anything. I was surprised that we had a committee on forest policy, that was a first. But, change in government and all those meetings and public inputs were tossed in the trash, so to speak.
