Ive Got some places with these on them and was wondering if they are worth cutting them down for logs or just keep them for firewood?

The large trees tend to have rot in the center but still produce a lot of lumber because of their size. I don't think I've ever cut one down without getting a flat because of those nasty thorns. It does not make good fence post or deck lumber but black locust does. It is a beautiful wood with cream colored sap wood and reddish brown heartwood. It can be tough to dry  because it gives up it's water slowly, dry too fast and it will warp. I've made a few things out of it and they look great. I don't think there is much of a market for it except maybe pallet stock. I'm trying to inform the local woodworker of it use so every once in awhile I give some to a customer to try out.

resembles mahogany when used in furniture. I often call it "Poor mans mahogany" myself.
remember man that thy are dust.

I assume you mean 18 inches to 2.5feet not 18 feet to 2.5 feet. Regardless that is nice sized and worth sawing.  I would not mess with low grade logs only nice looking ones.  It is pretty wood that is underutilized. Be sure to saw it as soon as it hits the ground. It will get as hard as the hubs of hell when dry.

I stand with what I said about decking and posts from exp. that IS  a nice size and worth sawing in my book .

No thread is complete without a few pictures.

Run of the mill honey locust with a mix of sapwood.  Little too gaudy and coarse grained for my taste but it can be attractive if used for the right piece.

I call it doty...really it is part rot and common in honey locust.  Sometimes there is blue colors which I think are the most attractive.  I like the stuff.  I shipped some of this stuff off to the left coast.  Iffen you can find the right buyer....  And the turners really like it.

So, what is it?  If I remember right it was a log with a insulator buried in it.

I cut a lot of it for firewood.  If you girdle the tree to kill it and come back in two or three years  the bark/thorns will fall off but the wood won't degrade much.  The logs can still be used for firewood or lumber but you won't pick up thorns in your tire.

I bet it would look very nice as paneling or wainscotting.

I am about 75 miles from Mammonth Springs AR.  So if you come down HY9 from Mammonth Springs we are about 95 miles apart. The sawmill is right on Hy 62/412 just west of Flippin AR.  We should be able to find you some coin or something around here you can use.  Big and ugly sell just about as good a slick and smooth.

I've sawn and turned the stuff..It's beautiful imo, especially the contrast between heart and sap. It often has real nice wavy grain. Like some have said it gets hard as a rock when it's dry.
