I'm just starting to file my chains and was wandering what files to use. The chains are 3/8 pitch 0.63 gauge. Can anyone help me

I'm running 3/8 and use a 7/32" file. I'm assuming you are talking about round ground tooth.

I'm pretty sure that i run square chisel. I really dont no. All i no is that my chain is the yellow stihl chain 3/8 pitch 0.63 gauge 66 drive links.

When I'm forced to buy stihl chain on my 372xp, I use a 7/32 file.

Good job on the link Kevin.  Stihl specifies 13/64" for 3/8 but the guys at the local Stihl shop told me you could use 7/32" without any problems.

M.Logger, have a good look at one of your chains square ground will have a right angle in the corner of the cutter. You probibly have round ground chisel,if not you can still use a round file and convert it to round ground. Its quite tricky to square file a chain right, best left to a grinder.Frank C.

Let's not confuse him with the square ground talk, since that style of sharpening is usually limited to pro loggers in the PNW.

Stihl recommends a 13/64" file, although I disagree. Every other brand of 3/8" chain calls for a 7/32" round file and I find that I get better results using a 7/32" file on the Stihl chain as well. The difference is miniscule but the 13/64" file can be too small leading to a 'duck's beak' on the cutting tooth top surface with too much hook that isn't really sharp.

thats wat happened to me. my friend who has been cuttin for a long time i mean a really long time told me to use a 3/16. so i did then had to go back with a 7/32 and make the chain look about like it was sharpened 4-7 times. but now its cuts like butter 8) 8. thanks ;D
