Does anyone know of online access to plat books or land ownership information. Thanks in advance.

I can get that information for the area in which I live. Had to go to the courthouse and get a password and then I could then go online and view that information. I expect that every county would have different procedures and available information.

Sorry that I did not provide enough info Iowa and missiouri are the ones that interest me most. Thanks

I think Missouri does it on a county by county basis. I know I had to buy one for the counties around me and they where $20-30 a piece.

Can't help you in Iowa or Missouri, but I'd bet that you could google the town or county website (if such an animal exists) and then browse the website to determine whether they provide online deeds or plats.

Back east the more modern registry's (Maine) or town offices (Vermont) do allow a user to view the deed or plat online, but similar to what CLL wrote, getting in to the website and/or printing them may not be free. I've found you are better off going to the appropriate office and let the pretty clerks help you find your way around the unfamiliar office.

Most of the counties in WA have good cadastral data available via website, which you can print from your computer easily.  However, they're not too happy to cough up shapefiles if you want to roll your own.  I have gotten in heated discussions with several (to remain nameless) county auditors over information rights.  I suspect that this will be a problem for some time.  Also, no two agencies seem to use the came combination of map datum and projection.  This makes stitching data together from different agencies a bit of a chore.  Why can't we all agree on a standard?

Here we can get distortion free aerial in Tif and MrSID, water, roads, contours, property boundaries with ID #'s, county boundaries, and stuff I can't remember off the web in Shapefile, CARIS, ArcInfo export format and all NAD 83 NB Double Stereographic. If you have a kid at college they can go to the Main Library and get DNR Forestry GIS data for free to. We have only one map datum for the whole province. You can also get an account for $10 a month to get maps through your browser and all the Plat information including taxation assessment and ownership info about the property. This was completed in 1998 at the time we got 911 province wide. I can find a specific stand of timber anywhere in the province even if I've never been there, that's how far we've progressed.  One of my clients gives me a map he wants marked out with the stands and map sheet number and he don't even have to be there. I just load up the aerial photo and map into my GPS, I get off the internet. Plus I have a book of paper maps that is standard fair for the entire province. 8)

You guys are WAY ahead of us.  Here, everyone really does have their own kingdom, and everybody plays "I've got a secret".  It's frustrating.  Versioning is also an issue -- some files are distributed as .e00 still, while others as .lyr or .shp.  I guess the challenge is just part of the job.
