Would you take a chance on this engine running about 2 weeks a year? It only needs to last a couple years and it would pay for itself.

Depends on how important those 2 weeks are...

I'd do it, but get the 2 year extended warranty.

I got one two years ago.  The 6.5 hp.  It replaced a honda 5.0 hp.  Ran it everyday for two summers on a fish feeder.  No problems yet.  I didn't get the warranty.   I might get another for spare.  Keep it under cover and it should last a couple of years.

Fishpharmer,

Did your engine run right out of the box with NO problems?  My son bought me a HF battery charger, I didn't need to try it for several months and then found it didn't work correctly. When I tried to take it back, they said tough luck, the time was up.

Actually, i had a similar situation.  I got a good deal on the motor.  Think i paid 125.  It sat in the box  for more than a year before being cranked or installed.  The honda was smoking bad when i bought the HF motor, yet ran a year before throwing the rod thru the crankcase.  So far HF motor uses no oil and doesn't smoke. So I guess the answer is yes.  I can't remember if it came with oil.  Think it was dry.

okie

I'd try it, but I'd get the extended warranty or wait until you just about need it to order it so you can put it to hard use and see if it quits you during factory warranty.

i never buy the extended warranty on anything. usually you wind up not needing it..some places are really pushy about selling the extended warranty. i always tell them no thanks. i will take my chances.

I'm with you, and keep that money in my pocket. They like to push for that sale because it is good/easy money in their pocket.

I tend to stay away from extended warranties too, but make an exception at Harbor Freight.  Much of the stuff I buy there doesn't see frequent usage, and the failure rate is a bit higher than some of the more expensive places.

I bought the 6.5 hp HF engine for my man lift used for pruning.  If fired right up out of the box, runs smooth, quiet and so far no problems.  For the price I paid (Less than $100 w/cupon) I consider it disposable.   It would have cost more to rent a man lift for one use so I figure it has paid for itself already.   :) 8)
