Last week a customer pulled a cherrybark red oak out of the briars and asked if I would/could cut it.  I said yes, on hourly rate.  Well, we threw it up there and got a nice stack of 4/4 lumber.  I took pictures of the logs, but forgot to snap a few of the lumber.  Katrina hit in August, 2005 !!!   Yes, I was set up under his shed.... ;D

Correct, only heartwood....and it was still very moist.  Some of the lumber was stained, especially in the pith area, but even that was very pretty.  He is going to use it as paneling in a house that he is building.

It should look nice.  Did it have the little bug holes in it?

WDH,  Yes bug holes big time.  There were actually 6 logs, so he got a nice stack of lumber.  He is going to dry & tongue and groove it and use it as paneling in his new home.

Magicman, that lumber will make some exceptional paneling.  Those little bug holes really add to the character.  Where else could your customer get red oak paneling with designer bug holes?  ;D

I once bought some pecan lumber with bug holes.  Built a bedroom suit as well as a dozen or so mantel and wall clocks.  Those holes were a very valuable selling point.

RE:wormy wood
My relative Charles (a Dentist) in NE MS was having a "Great Room" paneled in tongue and groove random width "pecky cypress" boards about 25 years ago.  He had enough delivered to do all 4 walls on a room about 30' x 40' x 10' high.
Thus he had a big load of boards.
He hired the best local carpenter to put the boards and molding up, a real professional, about 60 yrs old.
So he leaves for work when the carpenter showed up, and returns about 10 hours later.
Only to find that the  carpenter had only put  2 boards up.
When asked what the problem was the carpenter explained -
Quote[good southern drawl]"Well, Dr., I tried my best.  I went thru the whole stack of lumber twice and those  were the only two boards I could find without holes in them!  You got a real bad batch of lumber!![/good southern drawl]
Seems no one he ever worked for could afford pecky cypress.
It's on BEAUTIFUL room.
And except for the two boards (normally behind an open door) it's all pecky cypress.  Charles didn't have the heart to ask the carpenter to take down the first two boards.

I love it.  Pecky cypress still brings a premium.

BTW, Welcome to FF.  Do you live in Vt. or Ms?  What kind of mill are you looking for?

 Looks like this.

Comes with smaller character openings, also.
All truth passes through three stages:
   First, it is ridiculed;
Second, it is violently opposed; and
Third, it is accepted as self-evident.

I milled this pecky western red cedar log up for fencing. I milled it at 1 1/8" rather the ¾" so that it would hold up and hold the screws.

This is a pecky cedar fence after it has aged.
