timh, we have been looking at one that attaches to a skid steer for breaking down logs for the processor, theory is good, but I want to use it before purchasing it! Tim

Those splitter scares the ----  out of me. It would not take much to get a piece of clothing wrapped up in the splitter and then?  They might as well take the pto shaft cover off too. Accidents happen, why increase your chances of a catastrophic one.

I've got one on my skidsteer hydraulic auger.  I use it to break down large logs so they can be processed on my 14-12 Block Buster.  It works great.  I wouldn't recommend using one on any auger base that isn't reversible.  I've seen the videos of them on three point post hole diggers and wouldn't waste my time.  You'll be spending more time cutting the splitter free than splitting.  Even with reverse we've had to resort to a chainsaw to free it but that's rare as the operator gets the feel of the machine.

This was a straight grained log with no knots.  They don't all split this nicely or easily  ;D  It works.  Makes oversize junk logs useful.  This example could have went into the hardwood sawbolt pile but will make more $$ as processed firewood  :)

Corley5,
Have you had any issues with the point breaking on yours? I just got one of these and the point broke after about two hours of use. I will call the manufacturer tomorrow, but was curious about your experience. I do like this thing, hope it holds up.

I've got one on an augar attachment for my skidsteer. I get a lot of but logs and rounds over 3' in diamiter. I've used mine for a year now and only had to break the saw out 8 times out of 100s of hours of use. I do need to get another tip for it though as it's getting prity worn but it still works great.

Now I would not recomend using a screw splitter if your any where close to it because it does grab and its not a matter of if it will break your arm, catch clothing, or mutilate you, but a matter of when "if your close."

I use my reverse sometimes but the secret to using one of these ive found is not to get in the center of the log but instead off to the side. As it starts burrowing in I take the skidsteer and pull the screw twords me and down and most of the time it pops it open. Another thing ive learnt is with a fork/knot is i can put it right where the two meet and it will split it.

If you get one make sure it's mounted to a backhoe, skidsteer, or something so your not close to it. I've srarted drilling 5' diamiter rounds only to have it catch and bamb. A 100-150lb pice of wood spinning is not something you want to be close to. But with a little common sence and practice, it's well worth the investment.

Just my two cence what ever it's worth.

the screw style splitter on anything other than a loader ect is  asking for problems

i have heard of horror stories/ logs and fractions flying about personal loading portable screw splitters.
