Hello,
I have a few Hemlock trees in my woods, and some of them don't look to be doing so well (brown needles).  Is there any disease particular to Hemlock in the North-East?
Thanks.

You may want to look into hemlock woolly adelgid.  Real bad bugger...  >:(

I have some that just die too. But one will be 20 feet away and it will be fine. I have heard of a disease too.

That's how mine seem to be.  Some look fine, but right beside it, one can look awful.  I'm going to look into this "wooly adelgid".

How big do the sherbet hazelnut trees get, I've never seen one. Our hazel here in the bush is beaked hazel with a husk that has stiff hairs like raspberry. They are good also roasted, little kids used to sell them by the sack fulls along the road. The bush is full of them here anywhere hardwood was harvested.

The woolly adelgid is an insect that Ryn suggested. Nobody much manages eastern hemlock here in the Maritimes unless a snag tree. It's mostly left to stand or blow over. Not worth much in our markets.

This wooly bugger is wiping out the eastern hemlock in the appalachain mountains.  It is sad to see.

I lost several real nice hemlock to this pest about 8-10 years ago.  But, there are some young ones that are really trying to come back.

The snow shoe hare browses the seedlings so bad that they go like bonsai and die after awhile. Kind of look like the poodle haircut. Tuffs of leaves making a ball on the branch tips. :D

If it's woolly adelgid you'll see little white spots ( eggs ) on the underside of the needles. It is wiping out the hemlocks here in my area of PA.

good market for Hemlock in the Northern & Central part of Nova scotia. we have 2 mills that are 100% hemlock run sawing about a million board feet a year each . one mill saws 8 ' the other 10's to 16's .Logs must be fairly straight with no shake

What's the price WAP? We could never get more than $70 a cord here, mostly went into Maine down Smyrna Mills or Island Falls way, as I've been sitting at the diner down there and watched it go by at times.

I've seen cords laying on the ground that blew over, on thinning blocks.

i'll check the specs/prices when I'm back at work on Monday .
I think one mill offers 95 cord roadside  the other mill is $ 50 or so a tonne .. weight is better for hemlock of course.
