homelite & poulan clutch replacement

I am going to replace the clutch assembly on my poulan pro 235 and a neighbors homelite super 2 chainsaw. I have never done it before. Could someone give me instructions as to how to do the replacement. I would appreciate your help greatly. Thanks Dave

Dave, they both come off the same way.
You have to stop the piston by removing the spark plug and use a piston stop tool or a length of starter cord in the cylinder.
The clutch nut comes off clockwise but make sure you have the proper size wrench/socket.

When using the rope in the cylinder trick, it is a good idea to remove the recoil first. This is done to keep from putting undo stress on it when turning the clutch retaining nut. Also, watch for the piston to be in the top 1/3 of the up stroke before inserting the cord. This is done to prevent it from being jamed in a port.

Hey Kevin, Thank you very much for your help. I looked at the threads and will be sure I remove the nut the correct way. I have the 10th edition book with all the chainsaws in it and will look at that as well later on tonight. I wanted to hear a hands on approach to removing and reinstalling a clutch. You've been a big help.

I decided to fix that poulan pro 235 chainsaw and with the good help I received on this forum I think the repair will go just fine. Thanks again. Dave

More than once someone has called me, that their saw is JAMMED after they replaced the clutch.

I use the tool, how did you free the rope from the piston?

Usually I can get it free by just working the flywheel back and forth and cutting the cord off on the port. It is still a pain though cause you still have to disassemble to remove debris.
