Just a reminder to everyone about being safe around those saws.
A chunk of wood that had dropped down between the saw and the deck was heating up the saw so the sawyer used a stick to flip it out. The stick slipped and the teeth caught the stick flipping the back of the sawyers hand into the face of the spinning teeth. He was real lucking in that the saw cut thru his leather glove and just laid the skin open. There was no tendon or bone damage and only eight stitches required.

Its a good idea to have the section of the deck next to the saw hinged with ether a safe handle or foot pedal to swing it up to release rubbing trash. Frank C.

Boy....... He was real lucky.

Sometimes when we get in a hurry, we have bad habits of dropping cautions a little!

We have a live offbearer that runs next to the saw.  I had a Jackson mill that only had a hinged piece of metal there and had a small hydraulic cylinder that you could lift when those small pieces got next to the saw.  Worked like a charm.

No matter how small of an opening between your deck and your saw, you'll eventually find a piece of wood or bark that will lodge there and cause problems.  I always turn the saw off completely to take out a chunk of wood.
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

i had  seen a neighbor of mine do that same thing 1000 times . he used a piece of edging and swept the junk off the table. i always stood way back. he died of natural causes with most of his fingers still attached.pc

Never explain, your friends don't need it, and your enemies won't believe you any way.

Yes thoes circle saw blades are waiting to throw something at you. I had a 1x12x14' fall over onto the blade after cut was finished and came back at me soooo fast it hit my hand that was on my control and took alot of skin,It went between my shoulder and ear/head. I was lucky and learned a good lesson (have an off bearer to help and don't work thoes big saws alone M-24 Belsaw).I now have a wire screen between me and the blade. Peder

backwoods sawyer, my gut churned reading that. I sincerely hope that boy learned his lesson and shuts the machine off before leaving the controls. Peder, you were very very fortunate. :o

i had built a privacy fence looking shield that might have stopped something like that it was just 3 boards that you could hide behind attached to the mill table by the control they never got in the way and you could miss those stray chips.pc

Gday

Those are bloody close calls  :o :) big saws have never realy bothered me its the small ones like table saws that have bitten me once and never again i hope i almost cut my thumb off about 2 years ago by being in a rush and getting lazy on a 12" shop saw but you live and learn and hopefully the lesson dosen't cost you an arm and a leg  ;) :D ;D

Ill have to get a clip of a manual breast bench operating one of these days for you all  ive done 1000s of tons over them through the years they are an intresting machine to operate and you have to keep your mind on the job as you get within about 12" of a 30 to 42" saw on every cut  :) ;) :D
