According to the news item the other night a large earthquake has actually moved the Southern part of New Zealand a whole foot closer to Australia  :o

Wonder if I will get a discount on my trip to Aussie later in the year,  less distance to fly  ;D

But seriously the quake was an 7.8 which is pretty major, and in the last few weeks there have been about 25 aftershocks of over 5.0 in that area.

Luckily the quake occured in a large National Park, no towns or buildings nearby, so only minor damage. Under a big city it would have been a major disaster.

Ian That explains it, I thought there were more Kiwis in town lately I put it down to the start of shearing but it must be its less distance to travel :)

7.8 that would be enough to send your tree back over its hinge.

No serious damage or injuries, I think they have had about $3mil of insurance claims, but most of that was stuff like all the beer and wine in the supermarkets jumping off the shelves.

That would have been pretty traumatic to watch  :D

Maybe they could spread it out over a few days so we'd have a constant tremor instead over one violent quake. This will be change I can believe in!

We lived about 40 miles west of Sydney and my wife woke me in the middle of the night saying that the house was shaking.  It seemed OK to me and I said " Don't be silly. It's just that noisy, vibrating fridge...go back to sleep".  Next morning the news reported a minor earthquake had taken place.  I caught some real bad looks from her over that one.

Ian even got the right hat on.  Shield and goggles might help too.
