Has anyone here ever built a bed extension for an LT 15?  I am currently at 11 feet cut length. I need to be able to cut at least 18 1/2 feet. If ya get one bed extension form woodmizer that will only get me to 17'8". I hat to have to buy 2 extensions just to get to 18'. They do not look all that complicated to make. I could get a 20' stick of the tubing and cut it in half and make one 10' section from that. Cost wise it has to be less expensive to make that, unless I could buy 2 used sections for a bargain. So has anyone have any input on this question.

Thanks
Steve

Ok guys I priced the 2 x 6 x 1/8 box tubing. Here it is up to $350 bucks for a 24' stick. They want $146 for the 3 x 1 1/2 for the cross rails. Stuff is getting pretty pricey. Not that was from a middle man welding shop. I will try to fine an actual metal distributor next.

You might want to post in the Wanted thread to see if anyone out there bought an extra LT15 extension then found they no longer need/want it. Remember the rules about posting there but that's something I'd check if it was me. Good luck.

SLK, where are you located? We have a couple of local sources that would have what you need, One in Sherburne, Steel Sales Inc, another in Utica NY, Pacemaker, but if you are not close enough to pick it up yourself, freight would be very steep, due to the weight and length of what you need. If you are in another part of the country, look for places that specialize in selling steel and have it in depth, not just places that can "order it" for you. The second place also has an outlet in Binghamton, NY

SLK   it would help if you would finish filling out your info so we know where your located, that way forum readers can give you better info related to your area.

I built an extension for an LT-15 a few years ago that I had at the time.  I matched all the metal sizes
and was a fun project......

It has occurred to me that I could get an extra foot of length if I made an extension just on the drive side rail at the operator end.

I was wondering what type of material is that flat bar track that the rollers ride on? It looks plated of some sort and does not rust.

To reply about the extra foot sections at the end, Woodmizer gave me 2 of them when I brought the mill. So my mill as it sits will cut 11'.

I wonder if that short extension can be bought.  I don't see it anywhere on their site.

For you guys that made an extension what is that flat bar track made of? Did you use galvanized or is it some sort of plating on the flat bar??

Since no one here has responded I called Woodmizer and found out that the track piece is zinc treated. They claim it also has a 3* bevel on it. Not sure what that is for of it is it truly needed. If someone would kindly chime in that has built one perhaps they can shed some light on what they used for the track piece and if they have any problems with a piece being total square without a 3* bevel.

I suppose one could even use regular flat bar and spray it with a zinc coating.

I would look at the wheel on the sawmill to see if the 3 deg bevel is relevant. As far as the zinc coating, probably not necessary other than for rust prevention. You could just paint it.
Change is hard....
Especially when a jar full of it falls off the top shelf and hits your head!

Local wind direction is determined by how I park my mill.

And that zinc is a very thin coat like an electroplated fastener, so I wouldn't be bothered with the plating concerns. FB Marketplace has lots of ads for surplus steel of various sizes, it's a crap shoot though. Places like Metal Depot will be higher than other sources.
If your intent is only a few cuts of great length, maybe jerry-rig a wooden extension. Lots of threads on bed length ideas.
A guy in AL had several of what you want @ like $350 ea. but was over 3 years ago so probably now sold.
