Some of you may recall me asking about poplars that had been killed by horses eating the bark.  We finally cut them down last week after 2 years standing there.  They were really hard to cut by chainsaw  but they still look pretty good and I think they will make good lumber. The upper limbs were going soft but the trunks look good. They won't need much drying time.  :D  I'm guessing that they may be tough to saw.  We'll see tomorrow.  Any hints for sawing these?
I really don't have enough space to stack all of these in my drying shed but I'm afraid they will go bad fast if I leave them un-sawn out in the weather.  I guess the new equipment shed will become a lumber shed for a while.  I am going to make a real effort to sell the lumber.

My only suggestion would be don't feed too fast, until you see just what your getting into.
Knots will be hard too.
No real reason why it wouldn't make some good lumber.

I've sawn several of the dead logs now and the lumber is coming out good.  The logs are nearly dry and there is less bowing as I saw but they do saw hard...quite a bit slower than cutting wet.  Blade wear does not seem above normal.  I'm glad that we got them.

When customers ask about sawing "dead" trees, I just think, "sounds like money to me".   Same way with logs that have crooked or bad ends or decay in the center.  They are paying me to get the good part.  Satisfied customers are repeat customers.

I just let the hair go with the hide, saw the logs, please the customer, and  sometimes am surprised at what comes out of an ugly log myself.

Here are the logs killed by horses.  There are 36  here.  I've sawn 2 and there are 4 still standing.  The big ones here are 24 to 26" dia small end.  If I can't saw and sell these, I guess I'll have to start another cabin. :D
