I live in CA and just bought a 440C in Alaska to use for my commercial fishing business. I have not seen the tractor myself but had a friend who is a mechanic go look at it and drive it for me. He sent a bunch of pics and I'm trying to figure out what transmission it has. Looking at a picture of the dash, I don't see any shift levers as I've seen on other (older?) 440's. The seller said its a 4sp with a hi/low range. So...........this tranny is the world famous JD......what?

I've read here on the forum that the trans can be the weak link. If so, are there any other JD models (forestry or ag) that share this tranny that I should be looking for in terms of a backup or for parts? How difficult is it to change out the clutch?

Thanks

Well it will Be either a Power Shift or a Syncro-Range. Does it have One Shifter or 2 on the dash? I have the Syncro-range and i have 2 levers on the dash.. The one on the right is like a "Shuttle" Shifter (F (lo), N, Hi, R) the one on the left is the actual Gear 1-8 (Depending on the Range (Hi-Lo)) If it has a single shifter i believe its a Powershift Tranny.. Only delt with one and i didn't like it.

EDIT: The trannies i was explaining were in the late 60's through mid 70's 440's.. they may have changed by the C series.. I know its a differnt monster in the D series

You in all likely hood have the standard shift tranny, I have never seen a C with a power shift.  Its going to have 2 levers by your right thigh.  One will be forward 1st, 2nd, N, and Reverse.  The other will be your 3 ranges.

Are the 440C and 450C crawler the same transmission?  The shift pattern sounds the same. Stan

From what i have seen JD used the same tranny in many of its machines.. I know the same tranny i have in my skidder was used in the 3020/4020 Diesel farm tractor
