I live in central ny and I was wondering if Hemlock is anything worth taking to a mill? I have about 10-15 trees no smaller then 12". If so does anybody know of any mills that accept them....Thanks

I've old timers used to love it. I'm sure "new timers" do too. I've not used much of it personally, just cause it doesn't grow around here.

Are you looking to sell them to a mill or have lumber sawn from them?

You will probably have a hard time selling 10-15 trees to a larger commercial mill.  The small guys may be interested if there any small operations in your area.

The Almish use hemlock for building in N.PA. all the time.
Hemlock is prone to shake,  separation along the growth rings.

br389,welcome to the forum. Here in Maine it's the least money for saw logs.I like and use it for building my out buildings. Most don't like it at all.10-15 trees,a foot through will not bring many logs to have someone come in and cut.If you don't get the right logger, they may make more of a mess and damage other trees than what it is worth to you. Some loggers you could hardly tell they been there in a year.If that is all you want cut,you may not get any money at all since it's a small job. Just asking, but could you cut it yourself? Than sell it roadside? Does that make all that bad firewood either for yourself.

Yes I can cut my self I just went out and bought a brandnew uniforest winch last week for my tractor that way it makes my life easier for pulling out my logs in all of our deep snow

That changes everything than.Get out the phone book and look up the sawmills. In the state of Maine you need a permit to cut logs and sell them to a commercial sawmills. It's no big deal,a phone call and a little paper work and you are on your way.Need to understand how to grade logs,8-10-12-14-16 footers too. Some mills won't take certain lengths at certain times either. All mills will send you a spec sheet.
What kind of tractor you have,HP size,loader,4WD?Make up a couple short chains,4 footers.Much easier on the small stuff to use a 4 foot chain than a 8 foot one.I have 5-8 footers and 5-4 footers.Them 3pt winches are some nice.

br389, welcome to the forum! If you are interested in having the lumber for your own projects there are many small mills in our area that would saw them for you. I am just south of Ithaca and know of a mill nearby that will buy hemlock. The last time I priced him it would just cover the hauling fee! 10-15 logs I could probably saw up for you if you could get them to me.

For your own use another way would be to have someone with a portable mill come to your property and saw them. We have a couple guys in this area that do that.

Central NY is a large area. If you are in the Finger Lakes Region, the mennonites around Penn Yann would probably be interested.
